Rotation and revolution
Earth rotates on its axis while Earth revolves around the Sun and the Moon revolves around Earth; each motion occurs on a different timescale.
Moon phases and sunlight
Moon phases occur because observers on Earth see changing portions of the Moon’s sunlit half as the Moon orbits Earth.
Eclipses and alignment
Solar and lunar eclipses require particular alignments of the Sun, Earth, and Moon; they do not happen during every orbit.
Gravity, seasons, and tides
Gravity keeps objects in orbit and the Moon strongly influences tides. Earth’s axial tilt—not changing distance from the Sun—drives the seasons.
Try This in Class
Before each Moon phase, eclipse, or season question, have students sketch the positions or tilt they predict. After the answer, ask them to revise the diagram and label where the light comes from.
